Management of arterial lines and blood sampling in intensive care: a threat to patient safety.

This survey of intensive care units (ICUs) in the United Kingdom revealed that recommendations for safe arterial line management have been variably implemented. The use of the wrong fluid as a flush was reported in 30% of ICUs and a further 30% in other hospital units.
