Improving diagnostic safety is a national priority. This longitudinal study used Medicare claims data from 1999 through 2006 to explore regional variation in diagnostic practices (e.g., diagnostic testing, imaging, and diagnoses of major chronic conditions). Researchers identified significant differences in diagnostic practices across geographic regions that are unlikely to be related to patient characteristics.
