Intensive care unit readmissions in U.S. hospitals: patient characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes.

In this nationwide sample, 6.1% of patients discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU) were eventually readmitted to the ICU during the same hospitalization. The risk of readmission was associated with several clinical factors, including overall severity and complexity of illness at the time of ICU discharge.
