Although the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has published benchmarking data on safety culture across a large database of nursing homes, consumers and professionals lack information on the safety of care provided at individual facilities. This study used the AHRQ Nursing Home Survey on Patient Safety Culture to examine the relationship between safety culture and accreditation by The Joint Commission. Overall, accredited facilities reported higher levels of safety culture across most domains. A previous study also found that stronger safety culture was associated with fewer adverse events among nursing home residents. The role of accreditation in spurring safety and quality improvement is discussed in this AHRQ WebM&M commentary.
