Time motion study in a pediatric emergency department before and after computer physician order entry.

The introduction of a computerized provider order entry system resulted, perhaps not surprisingly, in a significant increase in the time physicians spent using the computer. System implementation was associated with a reduction in the time nurses spent discussing patient care with other staff members.
