Classification of adverse events occurring in a surgical intensive care unit.

This retrospective cohort study evaluated the incidence of preventable harm and mortality in surgical intensive care patients and trauma patients. While mortality was higher in the intensive care patients, both mortality and complications were deemed less likely to be preventable or directly attributable to provider actions.
