Emergency departments are fast-paced, chaotic, and stressful—workplace characteristics that are detrimental to a safety culture. This review explored safety culture in emergency care and uncovered elements that had positive and negative impacts. Positive factors included effective communication, transparency, organizational learning, management support, and teamwork. Based on these findings, the authors developed a framework for designing a culture improvement intervention.
