Multitasking and production pressures require cognitive effort that can diminish effective decision making. This commentary reviews the mental demands related to learning, visual scanning, task switching, deciding when to stop searching for something, accessing information, choosing decision strategies, complying with safe practices, and relying on automation. The author suggests that more evidence is needed to understand how human factors and workload affect safe decision making.
