Application of crew resource management (CRM) methods to health care settings has been driven by noted teamwork and communication failures. This article summarizes a successful teamwork training program, its implementation efforts, and the impact on selected outcomes. The training program was associated with a decrease in frequency and severity of adverse events and in malpractice claims, as well as high staff scores on a patient safety attitude questionnaire. While similar benefits of teamwork training are described in other clinical settings, this study’s findings are in contrast to an earlier randomized trial that failed to demonstrate such improvements. The authors provide explanations for the differential findings. Two of this study’s authors, Drs. Pratt and Sachs, co-authored a past AHRQ WebM&M perspective on the advantages of classroom-based teamwork training. Their efforts at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center were recognized as the organization received one of the 2007 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Awards.
