Interns overestimate the effectiveness of their hand-off communication.

Signouts by pediatric interns failed to communicate essential information 40% of the time, despite the fact that interns felt they delivered effective signouts. This phenomenon may be attributable to failure to ensure that the intern receiving signout had understood and appreciated critical patient information.
