Leadership has an important role in establishing a culture of safety in health care organizations. This commentary describes key skills required of health care executives to establish and nurture the culture necessary to ensure safe care and respectful practice. Areas of focus include the importance of modeling behaviors such as transparency, adopting just culture principles, and educating and engaging board members in safety work.
