Burnout contributes to both patient and clinician harm. This commentary argues that patient safety concepts should be applied to prevent and learn from clinician suicide and to improve the care environment for all. Activities supporting shared accountability, investigations into workplace factors detracting from clinician health, and development of triggers that indicate poor work culture can be designed to proactively protect staff from psychological harm.
