Safety culture and organizational culture are related concepts, often used interchangeably. While safety culture includes domains relating to communication and teamwork between providers, organizational culture refers to the existence of hierarchies and authority gradients. High reliability organizations are assumed to maintain both a positive safety culture and a balanced organizational culture. This survey found evidence to support this assumption, as a less hierarchical organizational culture was associated with a positive safety culture across a variety of domains. Both organizational and safety culture likely affect an organization's ability to successfully implement patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
