Hand hygiene is an essential practice for decreasing healthcare-associated infections but achieving compliance has been challenging. This prospective study compared electronic hand hygiene monitoring versus human auditors to assess the influence of the Hawthorne Effect on hand hygiene. Findings indicate that the Hawthorne Effect on hand hygiene was limited in duration on inpatient wards and is highly dynamic across time and auditor location, indicating a need for alternative and complementary monitoring methods.
