Failure to consider implementation, standardization, and user concerns can limit the effectiveness of technologies designed to prevent medication errors. This commentary discusses weaknesses in automated medication delivery systems and barcode technologies and how they affect nursing practice. The authors suggest solutions to these weaknesses, including improving access to support personnel through all stages of the technology roll out, effective barcode placement, and system training.
