Given the known patient safety risks of polypharmacy, primary care clinicians are being encouraged to deprescribe unnecessary medications. This qualitative study pinpoints the difficulties of implementing deprescribing, with clinicians describing immense pressure from patients, health care organizations, and medical culture to continue prescribing medications even in situations of little or no benefit for patients.
