Thresholds, rules and defensive strategies: how physicians learn from their prior diagnosis-related experiences.

This qualitative study examined primary care providers experience with missed diagnoses. After reviewing cases involving a missed diagnosis, clinicians proposed both analytical and intuitive changes to their clinical decision-making, which could result in lower thresholds for referrals or additional diagnostic testing.
