Newer hospitals are usually designed with mostly private rooms, in contrast to the shared rooms present at older facilities. This study examined the effect of a move into a new hospital with entirely private rooms on health care–associated infection rates. While rates of colonization with several types of antibiotic-resistant bacteria decreased, the effect on infection rates was mixed (in particular, Clostridium difficile infection rates did not change).
