Trends in opioid use in commercially insured and Medicare Advantage populations in 2007–16: retrospective cohort study.

Jeffery MM, Hooten M, Henk HJ, et al. BMJ (Clinical research ed.). 2018;362:k2833.

This retrospective study of claims data found that use of opioid medication among commercially ensured and Medicare populations did not change substantially between 2007 and 2017, despite increasing concerns about risks of opioid use. Opioid prescribing rates were higher and doses were larger among disabled Medicare beneficiaries.
