Despite adoption of the Universal Protocol and widespread prevention efforts, wrong-site surgeries continue to occur. This study found that between 2007 and 2014, there were 95 cases involving wrong-site surgeries, wrong-site procedures, wrong procedures, and procedures performed on the wrong patient reported to the California Department of Public Health. Orthopedic surgery accounted for 35% of the cases reported.
