Commercial aviation continues to provide inspiration for innovations in health care safety. This commentary explores how aviation automation practices can guide tool development and data use in the intensive care unit. The authors suggest that building health information technology on human-centered design principles will reduce overreliance on health IT and support interoperability, situational awareness, and multifaceted data analysis.
