Improving hand hygiene adherence is a critical step in reducing health care–associated infections. However, this systematic review found variability in the strength of the evidence supporting hand hygiene and there remains and urgent need for robust research exploring the effectiveness of multi-component interventions versus simpler interventions to improve adherence within various clinical contexts.
