Problems with patient flow through the hospital can lead to lengthy wait times in the emergency department and boarding of patients on inappropriate units—both of which are recognized patient safety threats. This article describes how an academic medical center developed a comprehensive approach to enhancing patient throughput, which resulted in decreased length of stay and improved bed capacity.
