Application of a theoretical framework for behavior change to hospital workers' real-time explanations for noncompliance with hand hygiene guidelines.
Approach to Improving Safety
Setting of Care
This study used direct observation and immediate feedback to explain why clinicians did not wash their hands. These real-time accounts provided insights into the reasons for noncompliance, which frequently included memory lapses, distractions, and lack of knowledge regarding specific indications (for instance, handwashing before and after donning gloves).
