Application of a theoretical framework for behavior change to hospital workers' real-time explanations for noncompliance with hand hygiene guidelines.

This study used direct observation and immediate feedback to explain why clinicians did not wash their hands. These real-time accounts provided insights into the reasons for noncompliance, which frequently included memory lapses, distractions, and lack of knowledge regarding specific indications (for instance, handwashing before and after donning gloves).
