Surgeons often prescribe opioids for patients after procedures, so they are in a key position to assess their opioid prescribing practices to manage risks. This commentary provides suggestions for surgeons at preoperative, postoperative, and outpatient care stages to address the potential for unsafe use of opioids. A recent PSNet perspective discussed opioid overdoses as a patient safety problem.
