Prior studies have demonstrated that autopsies can detect missed diagnosis. This retrospective observational study found that nearly 10% of autopsies had a previously unknown finding that could have influenced treatment or survival. These results underscore the need to perform autopsies in order to improve diagnosis, as recommended by the National Academy of Medicine.
