In an era where hospitalizations are brief, diagnostic tests ordered in the hospital are often still pending at discharge. Timely action on these results may reduce adverse events during the care transition. This systematic review identified promising strategies to improve follow-up of pending tests, including reliable documentation of tests pending at discharge and email notifications of test results.
