Resource-based view on safety culture's influence on hospital performance: the moderating role of electronic health record implementation.
Safety culture is thought to be a precursor to full implementation of evidence-based safety practices, but few studies directly tie improvements in safety culture to patient outcomes. This retrospective analysis of data from 154 hospitals examined the relationship between safety culture, as measured by the AHRQ Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture, financial data, patient outcomes, and electronic health record implementation. Researchers identified an association between positive safety culture and good financial performance, but they did not find a link between readmissions and safety culture. Electronic health record implementation was associated with better financial performance and lower readmission rates. The authors conclude that their findings provide impetus for hospitals to prioritize improving safety culture.
