Disruptive and unprofessional behavior creates an unhealthy institutional culture and leads to patient harm. In this study, hospital risk managers developed a set of consensus recommendations for how to manage unprofessional behavior, which included accountability, a zero-tolerance policy, and a culture of respect. In a past WebM&M commentary, two hospital leaders discussed their approach to an unprofessional action that placed a patient's well-being in jeopardy.
