Misdiagnosis is common and can lead to unnecessary care, overuse, and increased costs. According to this study, misdiagnosis of cellulitis may result in anywhere from 50,000 to 130,000 unnecessary hospitalizations annually, leading to hundreds of millions of dollars in needless health care spending.

Diagnostic error has gained recognition as an important patient safety concern. Established within the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority, this center will address diagnostic improvement needs in the Commonwealth. The center will focus on efforts to share data and information, design and test innovations, and facilitate partnerships that foster improvement.
