Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning can help clinicians integrate data into clinical processes to improve decision-making, diagnosis, and patient safety. This commentary suggests that concerns about AI replacing physicians are unfounded and instead that changes in practice resulting from the effective use of AI could improve worldwide access to safe, effective care.

This simulation study compared medical students' performance of electronic prescribing with and without clinical decision support. Students were less likely to access outside references to verify that medications were safe when decision support was in place, even when the decision support was incorrect. The authors conclude that electronic prescribing should be redesigned to facilitate external verification of medication safety.

Despite early enthusiasm for the utility of AI at the front line, some have raised concerns associated with legal liabilities and ethical issues. This review discusses these considerations and suggests approaches that leaders and clinicians should embrace to prepare for future integration of AI systems in practice.
