This study reviewed data from the United Kingdom's National Clinical Assessment Service concerning referrals due to poor physician performance. Approximately 5 per 1000 doctors are referred annually. Physicians were more likely to be referred when they were men, in the late stages of their career, or acquired their first medical qualification outside the country.
