In December 2004, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) launched the 100,000 Lives Campaign, which engaged hospitals to commit to interventions proven to improve patient care and prevent avoidable deaths. This news release announces that participating hospitals have collectively exceeded the campaign's goal by preventing an estimated 122,300 deaths. The announcement applauds the more than 3000 participating hospitals for their efforts and shares positive remarks made by health care leaders from several prominent national organizations. A past commentary written by IHI's president and chief executive officer, Donald Berwick, outlines the initiatives and goals of the 100,000 Lives Campaign.
