Impact of a successful speaking up program on health-care worker hand hygiene behavior.

Improving hand hygiene in health care facilities is a long-standing patient safety goal that has been challenging to achieve. This commentary describes how one institution implemented an initiative to address hand washing compliance. The project used leadership engagement, provided staff education, and enhanced access to supplies. The intervention has sustained improvements in physician hand hygiene adherence for nearly two years.
