The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is committed to supporting each of the individual specialty member boards in emphasizing patient safety education. This review summarizes the findings of an expert panel convened by ABMS to organize the core content of patient safety and how this may be applied in upcoming board examinations. The authors provide a general overview of patient safety, discuss the leading organizations involved and their goals, and share a list of safety interventions and practices as prioritized by these noted organizations. They follow with discussion of the advisory panel's suggested group of patient safety topics that would fit into relevant examinations. A past commentary more broadly discussed the role of physician specialty board certification status in the quality movement.
