Prior research has shown that nursing home residents are frequently exposed to inappropriate medications and that adverse drug events (ADEs) occur frequently in long-term care settings. In this study involving nursing home residents, researchers found an ADE rate of 6.13 per 100 residents per month. Using the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety model, they identified numerous resident and facility work system factors that were associated with ADEs.
